Boat to Bottle: How Captains Krill Oil Is Actually Made

The difference isn’t marketing. It’s chemistry, time, and what ends up in the capsule.

If you have already worked out that you want krill oil rather than plain fish oil — the phospholipid form, the easier-on-the-stomach reputation, the astaxanthin that comes along with it — then the only question left is which bottle. And that is where the labels stop helping you, because almost every one of them says “pure,” almost every one says “Antarctic,” and almost none of them says how the oil got out of the krill.

So here is ours, plainly, next to how most of the category does it. Not because the other way produces a bad product — it mostly doesn’t — but because it produces a different product, and you are entitled to know which one you are buying.

How most commercial krill oil is made

  • The krill is harvested, then frozen or held.
  • The oil is extracted later, onshore, in a processing plant. Solvent-based methods and supercritical CO2 are both common.
  • The finished oil sits in drums or tanks until it is encapsulated and bottled.
  • Some products are filled into capliques — a heat-sealed banded capsule — rather than a conventional softgel.
  • Some products list a separate astaxanthin source in the ingredients rather than relying on what came with the krill.

None of that makes the oil bad. Supercritical CO2 in particular is a clean, well-run process, and we are not going to stand here and tell you it is dangerous, because it isn’t. What it does do is add steps, add time, and add distance between the animal and the capsule. The krill oil that the early clinical work was done on came out of a much shorter process than the one that dominates the shelf today — that is the honest case, and it is a case about material, not about safety.

How Captains Krill Oil is made

  • Harvested in the Southern Antarctic Ocean with a continuous pumping system.
  • The catch goes straight into mechanical extraction on the boat. No chemical solvent, no supercritical CO2, no hexane — pressure and separation, nothing added.
  • Bottled in small batches. The oil does not sit in a warehouse drum waiting to be described as “bottled fresh.”
  • The only astaxanthin in it is the astaxanthin the krill was already carrying.
  • No fillers, no additives, no alterations of any kind.

The simple version: the krill never gets time to degrade, no foreign solvent is ever introduced, and the oil is in a capsule while it is still fresh. That is the entire difference. Everything below is just the detail.

That is also why we can be relaxed about the freshness question in a way most brands can’t. Why the process is the whole argument

The science that made people interested in krill oil in the first place was run on oil that was closer to its natural state than most of what is on the shelf now. Introduce a solvent, add heat, add weeks of bulk storage, add ingredients back in at the end, and you have a defensible supplement — but you no longer have quite the same material that was studied. That is the argument. It is a modest one, and we would rather make a modest argument we can defend than a big one we can’t.

We keep the process simple on purpose. Nature already made the oil. Our job isn’t to improve it with industrial steps and then charge you for them. It has been done this way for twenty years by a small family operation, and we still think the original process was the right one. That is also the least efficient way to make krill oil, which is a large part of why it costs what it costs.

What is actually in a serving

  • Astaxanthin — about 1.53 mg, the krill’s own

You will notice that is not the biggest number on the shelf, and we are not going to dress it up. You might not need us

The honest part. If you eat fatty fish twice a week, you are already getting what this bottle provides and you should keep your money. If what you want is grams of EPA and DHA — because your doctor gave you a number to hit, or your triglycerides are the reason you are here — a concentrated fish oil will get you there for much less, and it is not close. If you are vegan, this is a crustacean and you want algae oil instead. And if you have a shellfish allergy or you are on an anticoagulant, the conversation to have is with your doctor before it is with us.

What is left is a fairly specific person: someone who wants the cleanest, least-processed version of this particular oil, who has decided the process is worth a modest premium, and who would rather have a natural number that moves a little than an engineered one that doesn’t. If that isn’t you, one of the bottles above is a better buy and we would rather say so here than have you find out later.

Common questions

Is Captains krill oil extracted with hexane or any solvent?

No. The oil is separated mechanically on the boat — pressure and physical separation, no hexane, no ethanol, no acetone, no supercritical CO2. Nothing is added to pull the oil out, so there is no solvent residue question to answer. We wrote the long version of how the industry does it in our hexane article.

What does “extracted on the boat” actually mean?

The vessel harvests krill with a continuous pumping system and the catch goes into extraction on board, rather than being frozen or held and shipped to an onshore plant. The practical consequence is time: the gap between a live krill and finished oil is measured in minutes rather than in days of holding and transport.

Is supercritical CO2 extraction bad for me?

No, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. CO2 is a clean solvent, it leaves no meaningful residue, and a good CO2-extracted krill oil is a perfectly reasonable product. Our argument against it is not safety — it is that it happens in a factory, days after the catch, which is a different thing from what we do.

Does mechanical extraction make the oil more effective?

We have no head-to-head trial saying so, and we will not claim one. What we can say is what is different about the material: no introduced solvent, no extended holding before encapsulation, and the astaxanthin that came with the krill still doing its job in the bottle.

Does Captains add astaxanthin to the oil?

No. The red comes from what the krill already carried. Some krill oils list a separate astaxanthin source in the ingredients, which can be algae-derived or synthetic — if you want to check any bottle, ours included, read the ingredient line rather than the front of the box.

Why is the milligram figure on your label not an exact number?
