Why Captains Won’t Print an Exact EPA/DHA Number
People write us asking for the exact milligrams of EPA and DHA in a capsule of Captains Krill Oil™. They want a locked number they can type into a spreadsheet and trust the way they trust a prescription. Here is the unflattering answer, up front: we will not print one.
Not because the oil is a mystery. Not because we are hiding a weak lot. Because printing a locked milligram number would be a factory move, and Captains Krill Oil™ is not a factory oil. It is a natural raw oil from a boat. Factory brands can concentrate and blend until a chosen figure sits still on the panel. We do not. The number on a natural-oil label is a typical value — a planning figure — not a spec the ocean agreed to meet.
If that sounds like a dodge, keep reading. It is the opposite. It is the difference between a boat and a factory, written in milligrams.
The factory can lock a number. A boat cannot.
Most of the omega-3 aisle is a factory aisle, even when the front of the box talks about the sea. A concentrate starts as a mixed oil. A plant then strips, fractions, and blends it until EPA and DHA land on a chosen milligram. That is a real industrial skill. The panel can carry a figure the plant can hit again next Tuesday, because the plant is the thing that made the number.
A boat oil works the other way. Krill come aboard. The oil is pressed mechanically, on the boat, with no chemical solvents at any stage. Straight from the boat. What is in that oil is what the animals were carrying when the net came up — phospholipids, EPA, DHA, astaxanthin, the whole natural mix. Nobody stood at a kettle and added EPA until a target lit green.
That is why two bottles that both say “krill oil” can be telling two different stories with the same words. One is a manufactured figure. The other is a catch.

The ocean does not hold still
Krill oil is not a single recipe. A 2019 review in Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety put the phospholipid share of commercial Antarctic krill oil between about 39% and 81% — a twofold spread in the very fraction people buy krill oil for (Xie et al., 2019). Same species. Same ocean. Very different oil.
That spread is not a lab accident. The same review literature points to season, feeding, sex, and region. Krill that have been grazing hard do not carry the same fat as krill in a lean stretch. Gravid females do not match males. A catch in one sector of Area 48 is not a photocopy of a catch two months later. If you press the oil as it comes off the boat, you inherit that movement. If you want the movement gone, you have to manufacture it out in a plant.
The EPA and DHA ride inside that mix. They are a minority passenger in a whole oil, not the oil itself. A typical 500 mg krill-oil capsule on the American shelf carries something on the order of 60 mg of EPA and 30 mg of DHA — about 90 mg of the two omega-3s that count — which is why we already told you, in How Much Krill Oil Per Day?, to ignore the front of the box and read the back panel. Across published labels, a gram of whole krill oil often lands somewhere around 100 to 250 mg of EPA and DHA combined. Those are category ranges, not a Captains spec. They move a little lot to lot, the way a wild catch does.
Phospholipid versus triglyceride is a real difference in the vehicle, and we walked that chemistry in Phospholipid vs. Triglyceride Omega-3s. It is not a reason to pretend the milligram count is carved in stone.
What the law actually asks a label to do
The U.S. rule for the Supplement Facts panel is 21 CFR 101.36. It tells a brand to declare dietary ingredients by quantitative amount per serving. It does not tell a boat to turn a wild oil into a pharmaceutical.
Compliance for that panel is judged under 21 CFR 101.9(g). FDA splits nutrients into two classes. Class I is added nutrients in fortified or fabricated foods — the plant added them, so the composite has to meet the labeled amount. Class II is naturally occurring (indigenous) nutrients. For those, the composite has to reach at least 80% of the value declared on the label. Reasonable excesses over labeled amounts are acceptable within current good manufacturing practice.
Read that again if you sell a natural oil. The federal rule already knows that a nutrient the ocean put in the animal is not the same thing as a nutrient a plant poured in to hit a target. The 80% band is not a loophole we invented. It is the government’s own recognition that indigenous nutrients move.
The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) then tells the industry how to write the number you do put down: by weight, in milligrams per gram, never by chromatographic “area percent.” Area percent can inflate the figure by 10% or more and send a finished product off its own label (GOED Industry Advisory, 1 October 2018). GOED’s voluntary monograph — version 9.0, dated 23 July 2026 — is the same idea in longer form: express EPA and DHA as milligrams per gram, as free-fatty-acid equivalents, so bottles can be compared without a sleight of hand (GOED Monograph v9.0).
None of that is a requirement to lock a natural catch to a single milligram and pretend the next haul will photocopy it. A typical value on the panel, checked against real lots, is how a natural oil tells the truth. A locked spec on a concentrate is how a factory tells a different, also-honest truth. Mixing the two languages — printing a boat oil as if it were a concentrate — is the dishonest move.
One more piece of theater, because it fools people standing in the aisle. The big number on the front of most krill-oil boxes is the weight of the oil, not the weight of the EPA and DHA. “1,000 mg” means a gram of whole oil. The omega-3s are a slice of that gram. Two bottles can shout the same front number and deliver very different back-panel figures. We unpacked that shell game when we wrote about “triple strength” labels. This page is the next honest step: even the back-panel figure, on a natural oil, is typical. It is not a carved spec.
Typical is not a spec
So when you turn a Captains bottle over, read the EPA and DHA lines the way you would read a weather report, not a blueprint. The number is typical. It is there so you can plan a daily intake. It is not a claim that we blended the oil until that exact milligram sat still.
We test lots at random. They come back strong. Documentation is available on request. We do not pull a paper for all lots, and we will not dress random-lot testing up as something it is not. A stack of certificates for lots we did not pull is theater. A real result on a lot we did pull is information.
If a brand promises you a certificate for each bottle that leaves the building, ask how they got the oil that still. The honest answers are usually “we bought a concentrate” or “we blend until the number holds.” Both are legitimate factory answers. They are not our answer.
Dose to your goal, not to a box
The useful number in this whole conversation is not the one on our panel. It is the one that matches what you are trying to do.
If you eat fatty fish twice a week — sardines, mackerel, salmon, herring — you likely do not need a capsule at all, ours included. The fish already did the job, and dinner came with it.
If you do want a capsule, decide how much EPA and DHA a day you are aiming for, then do the arithmetic on the back panel of this bottle. That is the whole method in How Much Krill Oil Per Day?. The panel is a typical value, so use it as a planning estimate, not as a laboratory printout.
If you want to stop guessing, get a blood test that reads your EPA and DHA status — the omega-3 index is the common one — and dose to that, then retest in a few months. A bottle cannot see your blood. A label cannot see last night’s dinner. Chasing a milligram on a box while ignoring the number in your own blood is how people stay confused.
And if what you actually want is a locked milligram you can take to the tenth, buy a concentrate. Say so out loud. A factory oil is the right tool for a factory job. Do not buy a boat oil and then be angry that the ocean moved.

Two: you want grams of EPA and DHA, not milligrams. A concentrated fish oil is cheaper per milligram. We have said that before and it has not stopped being true.
Three: you want a number that never budges. You want the plant, not the boat. Buy the plant.
