Does Krill Oil Really Cross the Blood-Brain Barrier?

Mostly, no — not the way the marketing implies. The transporter story krill sellers lean on is real science, but the best evidence says ordinary krill oil does little to raise brain DHA, and no trial anywhere has shown that a krill oil capsule improves memory.

We sell krill oil — Captains Krill Oil™ — so it would be easier for us to repeat the claim. It’s a good story: the brain’s gate, the special key, our oil happens to be the key. But we’ve read the studies the story is built on, and they say something more interesting and less flattering. Here it is, straight.

Where the blood-brain-barrier story comes from

Your brain is the fattiest organ you own, and DHA — the long omega-3 — is its favorite building fat. But the brain doesn’t take deliveries from just anyone. In 2014, researchers identified a transporter called Mfsd2a sitting at the blood-brain barrier, and found it ferries DHA into the brain in one specific package: lysophosphatidylcholine, or LPC-DHA. Not free DHA. Not the triglyceride form in standard fish oil. A phospholipid-type carrier.

You can see the marketing leap from the deck of the boat. Krill oil carries its omega-3s on phospholipids — that’s the honest, real difference between krill and fish oil, and we’ve written about what the phospholipid form does and doesn’t mean. So the pitch writes itself: brain wants phospholipids, krill has phospholipids, buy krill for your brain.

The pitch skips a step. The step is digestion.

The step the marketing skips

The DHA in krill oil rides on phosphatidylcholine — PC, not LPC. Those are different molecules, and your gut doesn’t hand either one to your bloodstream intact. Digestion breaks most dietary fat apart and repackages it, and by the time krill oil’s omega-3s are circulating, most of them are traveling in the same vehicles fish oil’s are. The special key mostly doesn’t survive the trip to the door.

Don’t take our word for it — take the word of the research program that krill marketing borrows its credibility from. In a 2017 study in Scientific Reports, mice fed DHA in the LPC form built measurably more brain DHA and did better on memory tasks; the same DHA in ordinary form did neither. Then in 2020, the same group tested krill oil itself. Krill oil pre-treated with an enzyme to convert its PC into LPC raised brain DHA about 5-fold and brain EPA about 70-fold in mice. Untreated krill oil — the thing actually inside every capsule on the shelf, ours included — had little effect on either.

Read that closely. The study most often waved in the direction of “krill oil crosses the blood-brain barrier” is, on its own data, a demonstration that regular krill oil is not the shortcut. The shortcut is a modified research oil that you cannot buy.

What the human trials actually show

Mice aren’t people, so here’s the human ledger, and it’s short.

One randomized controlled trial has looked at krill oil and brain function in healthy people: Konagai and colleagues, 2013 — 45 healthy Japanese men, aged 61 to 72, twelve weeks of krill oil, sardine oil, or a placebo oil. The krill group showed greater changes in blood-oxygen signals over the cortex during memory and calculation tasks, and a shorter P300 brain-wave latency during a working-memory task. Those are real measurements. They are also not the thing you care about: the study didn’t show people remembering more, thinking faster, or performing better on anything. Forty-five men, one trial, brain signals but not outcomes.

The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, which reviews the evidence on brain supplements for a living, puts it flatly: no studies have tested whether krill oil can prevent cognitive decline or dementia, and per capsule, krill oil carries considerably less DHA and EPA than fish oil to begin with.

And then there’s the trial the industry doesn’t mention. In 2009, Neptune — then the biggest name in krill oil — registered a 175-patient, three-arm, placebo-controlled trial of its krill oil in early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, called MNEMOSYNE. It ran, it finished in 2011 — and as far as we can find, the results were never published anywhere. A krill company ran the largest brain study in the category’s history and went quiet. We can’t tell you what the data said. We can tell you that companies rarely sit on good news for fifteen years.

Your brain wants a trickle, not a flood

Here’s the context that makes the whole argument smaller than the ads want it to be. PET-imaging work at the NIH measured how much DHA the living adult human brain actually consumes: about 3.8 milligrams a day, with a half-life of roughly two and a half years. Your brain is not a bucket you top up each morning. It’s a slow-turnover organ that holds its DHA for years and sips replacement in milligrams.

What that means practically: a couple of servings of fatty fish a week supplies the brain’s trickle many times over, and the question that matters is whether your diet contains meaningful EPA and DHA at all over years — not which capsule tells the cleverest transporter story this month.

What we’ll say about our oil — and what we won’t

The honest version of the Captains pitch has never needed the brain claim. We press the oil mechanically, on the boat, right after the catch — no chemistry, no solvents at any stage. What’s in the capsule is the whole natural oil the krill were carrying: phospholipids, EPA, DHA, astaxanthin, in proportions that vary a little lot to lot the way a wild catch does. We test lots at random and they come back strong, documentation available on request, and we’ve been at this for 20 years.

What we won’t do is tell you that capsule crosses the blood-brain barrier and sharpens your memory. On the evidence, nobody’s krill oil has earned that sentence — including ours. A brand that says it anyway is quoting mouse studies about an enzyme-modified oil it does not sell.

You might not need us

If you eat fatty fish twice a week, your omega-3 needs — brain included — are likely covered, and no capsule earns its price. If brain health is the only reason you’re shopping for krill oil, our honest advice is to save the money or spend it at the fish counter, because the brain-specific evidence for any krill capsule is one small trial of brain signals. If you’re vegetarian, or you simply want DHA at the lowest cost per milligram, algae oil or fish oil will serve you better than we will, and we’ve said so in print before.

Unproven. One 12-week randomized trial in 45 healthy older men found changes in brain-activity signals during memory tasks, but no improvement in actual task performance was reported, and no trial has tested whether krill oil slows cognitive decline. Is krill oil better than fish oil for your brain?

What is LPC-DHA, and does krill oil contain it?

LPC-DHA — lysophosphatidylcholine-bound DHA — is the specific package the brain’s Mfsd2a transporter carries across the blood-brain barrier. Krill oil’s DHA is mostly bound to regular phosphatidylcholine, not LPC. The studies showing large brain-DHA increases used krill oil modified with an enzyme in a lab to create LPC forms; that research oil is not what’s sold in stores.

Does the astaxanthin in krill oil protect the brain?

Astaxanthin is a genuine antioxidant, but the amount in a daily krill oil serving is a fraction of the doses used in the studies behind those claims. Its proven job is protecting the oil in the bottle from oxidizing — we cover that honestly in our astaxanthin article.
