Can You Take Krill Oil If You’re Allergic to Shellfish?

No. If you have a diagnosed shellfish allergy, don’t take krill oil — not anyone’s, and not ours. Krill are crustaceans, the shrimp allergen is in them, and it has been found in finished krill oil products.

A brand that hedges on an allergy question to keep a customer isn’t one you should trust on anything else. Here is what the science says, where the real uncertainty sits, and what to take instead.

Krill is a shellfish, full stop

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a small crustacean — the same broad family as shrimp, lobster and crab. The reason shrimp sets off so many people is a muscle protein called tropomyosin, which the allergy field calls an “invertebrate pan-allergen” because versions of it turn up across crustaceans, mollusks, and even dust mites and cockroaches.

Krill has its own. In 2008, researchers at a Japanese food-safety lab sequenced the tropomyosin from two krill species, including E. superba, and tested it against blood from shrimp-allergic patients. The IgE antibodies from those patients bound krill tropomyosin just as they bound shrimp, lobster and crab — and did not bind proteins from mollusks or vertebrates. The krill protein carried sequences closely matching the known binding sites on the main shrimp allergen (Pen a 1). Their conclusion was measured: krill tropomyosin is potentially allergenic to shrimp-allergic people. Nobody has run the oral-challenge trial that would make it more precise than that, and no ethics board is likely to.

This is why every krill oil sold in the United States, including ours, is legally required to declare crustacean shellfish on the label. It isn’t a courtesy warning. It’s federal allergen law, and the science behind it is solid.

“But it’s just oil — there’s no protein in oil”

This is the argument people reach for, and it’s a reasonable one. Allergies are to proteins. Oil is fat. Highly refined oils from allergenic sources — peanut oil is the classic example — carry so little protein that many allergic people tolerate them. So does that logic rescue krill oil?

It was tested. In 2013, a Norwegian group at the University of Tromsø bought commercial krill oil products off the market and went looking for tropomyosin in them. They found it — a protein of the right size that a shrimp-tropomyosin antibody recognized, present in the krill oils but absent from a comparison oil made from a different zooplankton. Their stated conclusion was that Antarctic krill oils contain tropomyosin and need to be labeled unfit for people with shellfish allergy. That paper is the reason “just oil” isn’t a defense. Trace protein survives into the finished bottle.

How much is unknown, and it will vary by product and by lot. The same group noted that the protein-extraction method they used wasn’t ideal, so nobody has a clean milligram number to hand you — which is itself the point. For an allergy that can produce anaphylaxis, “an unknown trace amount” is not a number you gamble on.

The honest part that’s bad for us specifically

Here’s where we tell you something a raw-krill-oil company would rather not.

Captains is pressed mechanically on the boat, right after the catch — no solvents, no chemistry, no refinery. That’s our whole reason for existing, and for most buyers it’s the selling point: you get the whole natural oil the krill were carrying, unstripped. But think about what “unrefined” means for an allergic person. Heavy refining is exactly the process that strips protein out of an oil. A raw, minimally processed oil has, if anything, more reason to carry trace protein than a heavily processed one, not less.

We don’t test our oil for tropomyosin. We test lots at random for the things that matter to a normal buyer — potency and contaminants — and they come back strong, with documentation available on request. But a random-lot heavy-metals result tells you nothing about allergen protein, and we won’t pretend otherwise. If you’re shellfish-allergic, the fact that Captains is raw makes us a worse choice for you than a refined competitor, and no competitor is a safe choice either. Skip the whole category.

What about the “krill is less allergenic than shrimp” finding?

You’ll see this cited, so here it is in full. A 2012 study presented to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology tested krill extracts and found that krill needed roughly 100 times the concentration of shrimp to produce the same antibody response — leading the authors to suggest that shrimp-allergic people are unlikely to react to krill.

Two things to weigh against it. First, the authors themselves said an oral challenge in shrimp-allergic patients was still required, and that challenge hasn’t been published. Second, “100-fold less potent” is a laboratory comparison, not a safety threshold — a severely allergic person can react to a tiny fraction of a serving. A finding that krill is a weaker allergen than shrimp is interesting science and a bad reason to swallow a capsule of it. Every allergy authority we can find lands on the same side: avoid.

Where the real gray areas are

Not everyone who asks this question has the same allergy, so a few distinctions matter.

Allergic to finned fish, not shellfish? Different proteins entirely — the fish allergen is parvalbumin, not tropomyosin, and the 2008 Japanese study found shrimp-allergic IgE didn’t bind vertebrate proteins at all. A fish allergy is not by itself a krill allergy. That said, in a 2024 analysis of 945 seafood-allergy patients in the UK and US, about a quarter of those with fish allergy also had shellfish allergy — so if you’ve never been tested for shellfish, get tested before you assume.

Allergic to mollusks only — clams, oysters, scallops? Mollusk and crustacean tropomyosins cross-react in some people and not others. If your allergist has confirmed you’re crustacean-tolerant, that’s a conversation to have with them, not with a supplement label. Absent that confirmation, treat it as a shellfish allergy.

Shellfish intolerance, or a bad reaction once? Food poisoning from shellfish is common and isn’t an allergy. But shellfish allergy is also the most common food allergy in American adults — 2.9 percent, per a 2019 survey of over 40,000 adults — and a large share of it starts in adulthood. If you’re not sure which you had, that’s a skin-prick test, not a guess.

You don’t need us — here’s what to take instead

The omega-3s in krill oil are EPA and DHA. They aren’t unique to krill; krill just carries them on phospholipids, which is a real but modest difference we’ve written about honestly. If you’re shellfish-allergic, you have three good routes to the same molecules.

Eat the fish. Two servings a week of salmon, sardines or mackerel covers most people’s EPA/DHA, no capsule required. Fish and shellfish are different allergens, so for most shellfish-allergic people the fish counter is open.

Fish oil. Refined fish oil is the cheapest EPA/DHA per milligram on the market, and a small 2008 pilot study found even fish-allergic patients tolerated it — six of six passed skin tests and oral challenges. Read the label: some fish oil blends include krill.

Algae oil. EPA and DHA grown in tanks, no animal in the supply chain and no shellfish allergen at all. It’s the cleanest answer for a crustacean-allergic person and for vegans alike, and we’ve said in print that algae beats us for both groups.

Is there really shellfish protein in krill oil, or just fat?

What omega-3 should a shellfish-allergic person take instead of krill oil?

Fatty fish twice a week if you tolerate fish, refined fish oil if you want the cheapest EPA/DHA, or algae oil if you want zero animal allergens. All three deliver the same EPA and DHA molecules that krill oil does. Check fish oil labels, because some blends add krill.

Is raw or “unrefined” krill oil safer for allergies than refined krill oil?
